Xiaozhou Village
The word "Zhou" in classical Chinese means "island." True to its name, Xiaozhou Village in the Guangzhou suburbs is like a small island, surrouded by a number of winding streams that converge into the Pearl River. Along the water, visitors can find old houses and temples, stone roads and bridges, old trees and fruit gardens, as well as listen to singing of birds and barking of dogs, which together create a picture of the tranquility and leisure of country life at this ancient village that is more than 1,000 years old. The people who have been living here for many generations are simple and welcoming. They used to fish, but now they mainly make ends meet by selling fruits and handicrafts.
Xiaozhou started to attract established local artists in the 1990s. Led by Guan Shanyue and Li Xiongcai, who were both great masters of the Lingnan School of painting, many painters and calligraphers have set up their studios in the neighborhood, enjoying a kind of reclusive life and creating art here. Therefore, Xiaozhou has become well-known, not only because of its natural beauty, but also for its cultural atmosphere.
When the Guangzhou University Town on nearby Xiaoguwei Island was put into use in 2004, many students from across the river also moved in. As rents are low, the housing available in Xiaozhou is ideal for art students who have little money. The arrival of these young and creative people also brought changes to the local community, as it became more cultured with the emergence of coffee shops, bookstores and an outdoor theater.
With so many attractions, Xiaozhou has unsurprisingly turned into a sightseeing spot. A proposal has been made to develop the village into a combination of a water town, cultural center, ecopark and entertainment venue. It's hard to say whether the end result will be good or bad, but let's hope the original environment and lifestyle can stay untouched.
